Student Artwork Selected for ‘Kids with heART’ Contest

February 21, 2024 - Artwork submitted by three Comal ISD students with dyslexia was selected among the six winners of the annual Texas Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) ‘Kids with heART’ contest.

The three winning entries were created by Ryan Frederick, Konner Davis and Drama Moore and will be transformed into notecards for ALTA’s fundraising event where a portion of the proceeds goes to the ALTA Charitable Foundation to support scholarships toward training dyslexia professionals.

The contest’s guidelines included theme suggestion such as friendship, nature, pets and ‘when I grow up.’ Frederick, a first-grade student from Hoffmann Lane Elementary School, chose to draw a picture about what she wants to be when she grows up. Her classroom teacher is Jaclyn Doyal, and her dyslexia teacher is Rebecca Jenkins.

Davis, a fourth-grade student from Startzville Elementary School, also chose to draw about what he wants to be when he grows up. His classroom teacher is Lacy Trevino, and his dyslexia teacher is Kathi Snell.

Moore, a fourth-grade student from Rebecca Creek Elementary School, chose to draw pastel flowers. Her classroom teacher is Alexis Evans, and her dyslexia teacher is Amanda McDonald.

Comal ISD submitted more than 60 entries this year in kindergarten through fifth-grade with three winners.

The district hosted a similar art contest in the fall for both elementary and secondary students with two pieces chosen for display during Dyslexia Information Night on October 17. It garnered more than 150 entries.

The winning entries selected were by Moore and James Brooks, a sixth-grade student from Pieper Ranch Middle School. His dyslexia teacher is Sylvia Rios. Winners received a backpack full of art supplies.
